How ANPR parking works at events

ANPR stands for automatic number plate recognition. At an event car park it means one simple thing: your number plate is your ticket. No paper pass, no barcode on your phone, no window sticker. You drive up, a member of staff points a camera at your plate, and you are either waved in or politely turned around. Here is how the whole journey works, in plain English.

Step 1: book against your plate

Before the event, drivers book their space on the venue's own branded booking site. They type in their registration, pick the day they are coming, and pay. Confirmation is instant, and the system even looks up the vehicle make and model automatically from the plate, so the booking shows the car itself rather than just a string of characters. From that moment the plate is the credential. There is nothing to print and nothing to lose down the back of the seat.

Step 2: green or red at the gate

On the day, gate staff run our ANPR app on an ordinary iPhone or Android device. They point it at each arriving car and the app reads the plate in a moment. The answer is deliberately simple:

  • Green means the plate has a valid booking for that day and that car park. Let them in.
  • Red means it does not. Stop, and deal with it calmly at the window.

Because the check takes seconds, cars keep rolling. That is the real prize of ANPR at events: no fumbling for emails at the window, no queue building back onto the public highway, no standing traffic outside the gate.

Step 3: it all works offline

Event car parks are often fields with no signal. Our app is built for exactly that. The plate is read on the device itself, staff sign on with a PIN, and scanning carries on all day with no connection at all. Everything syncs the moment signal returns. A muddy rural site works just as well as a city stadium.

What the venue sees

Every scan feeds a live control room for the venue team: who has booked, who has arrived, and how many spaces are left, day by day and per car park. Capacity is oversell-proof, so the system will never sell space 501 in a 500-space field. The team can import and export bookings by CSV and message drivers when plans change. For permanent lanes, an optional fixed ANPR camera does the same job automatically, day and night, on 4G or Starlink, and can even trigger a barrier.

What it means for drivers

For the person behind the wheel it is refreshingly boring: book once, turn up, drive in. No queues, no paperwork, no wondering whether the space will still be there. All of it runs on one secure, UK-hosted database, GDPR-minded and ICO registered, built by the team behind Event Support Team and Big Parking, who are on the ground at UK stadiums, concerts and festivals every weekend, checking in tens of thousands of vehicles.

See it working

The quickest way to understand ANPR parking is to watch a plate turn green. Book a demo through the form on our homepage or email hello@parktec.co.uk and we will show you the whole journey, from booking to gate.
